Sao Luis do Maranhao

Nos ja estamos em Sao Luis e desta vez acompanhados da Vera e o seu "semi-descasado" marido Terry.
Ja chegamos e fomos logo comer comida maranhense. Estamos na pousada "Portal da Amazonia"- o qual gostamos muito.

The next journey to ST Luis in the north east of Brazil in times gone by it must have been a beautiful colonial city. We arrived here at the time of the festival of the boi (COW FESTIVAL) . Beautiful all the costumes and happy people trying there best to perform elegant colours and very happy people, good visual - excellent experience.


E a noite ja fomos curtir o Boi - esta foto e do Boi Barrica - que alias eu tenho o CD - e um boi bem pequeninho que um dancarino segura na mao.
E muito interessante.



Nesta foto eu e Vera realmente decidimos pagar mico - e na porta do restaurante Antigamente - que fica bem no meio do centro historico.





Estou voltando a Sao Luis depois de quase 13 anos e com muita tristeza encontrei uma cidade abandonada pelo governo. Tudo aqui precisa ser renovado - imagino que estas ultimas chuvas so pioraram o estado das bonitas casas antigas com seu lindos azulejos portugueses.





The historic part of Sao Luis has many a building covered with tiles imported from Portugal sum 500 years ago so old but yet so new just cool.

Soweto

Nos ainda dormimos uma noite em Africa do Sul onde aproveitamos o dia para conhecer Soweto - o bairro onde Nelson Mandela e o Arcebispo Desmond Tutu viveram muitos anos. (Eles agora vivem na Cidade do Cabo)

Soweto, where Nelson Mandella - the hope of all Africans - was born and lived for most of his younger life.

His house now a Museum - is a very small brick dwelling.

African animals

Hyaena with very strong neck and dark spots on the body become duller with age.

There are many little herds of Impala through out the park one dominant male and approx 15 to 40 females a very busy boy, the Impala is also used as a table meat peter tried the meat and thought it was a beautiful tasting meat very lean.

We saw a lot of Buffalos - (one of the big five) some of the herds were 100 and more strong and then there are the bachelor groups 5 or 6 beasts

We also saw lots of elephant herds a
majestic animal.

White Rhinoceros - this is a bull big and powerful almost poached to extinction for there horn.

A Buffalo calf about one year old, so much like our domesticated cattle.






Leopard- its a beautiful cat - We tracked it through the bush and was not phased by the vehicle or us a strange thing to be part of.




just relaxing, and there were three vehicles 3 metres away from it not bothered at all.

WildeBeest - another herding animal can travel in groups of 10 to 50000 but this one was happy on his own.

Nosso ranger era um africano muito simpatico - KG - ele adora o Brasil, por causa do futebol logico - eu prometi mandar uma camiseta da selecao brasileira (ja mandei) para Pretoria onde os pais dele vivem e onde ele vai agora em junho passar um mes de ferias.



Primeiro ele nos pega no aeroporto do Sabi Sabi Lodge, depois ele e responsavel de nos acompanhar ate o chale e a noite nos buscar e deixar no chale; ele dirige o Land Rover e procura os animais - ele e uma enciclopedia da Africa = sabe tudo sobre os animais - gostamos muito dele e do servico dele.






KG, the Ranger and Zeb, the tracker. They were both intensly friendly. KG was a wealth of knowledge about all things African. He made us laugh a lot and made us feel at ease. He has quite a difficult job because people have such high expectation when going on a safari. It is a safari in the wildenness not a Zoo. All the animals roam freely there not caged so you see what you see and aresaw a lot of different types of animals.

Zeb, our tracker was a quite man and has the eyes of a Lynux he could spot the smallest animals from afar and explained every type of track left behind by what ever animal had left it and what time it passed by.

We could not have wished for better guides.

Zeb - nosso tracker - e outro africano bem simpatico tb - alias todos eles sao muito faladores e alegres. Todo mundo fala ingles na Africa do Sul.
Ele fica sentando no Jipe bem na frente para seguir e procurar rastros dos animais - e um servico bem interessante.

Taking an African Safari

Going on a African safari 1 hour flight from Joburg in a nine seater plane a bit bumpy. When we landed we were greeted by our ranger that would take us on our 3 days safari - KG was his name, a champion of a man. He took us to Selati lodge where we would stay for 3 days.

The lodge has a bygone theme mostly railway memorabilia with beautifully appointed lodges.
We were met at Selati by its manager and a welcoming drink then he explained all what was to happen during our stay and made us aware of the dangers of walking out side on your own at night.

"Its a do not" for there are all the wild animals just outside your door and that we are only food to the carnivores and the elephant now kills more people than any other animal in Africa. We took his words seriously.

On our first safari outing we saw a herd of elephants - excellent, we got very close within 5 meters of the majestic beasts.

O Safari

Na segunda pegamos um aviaozinho - sim so cabiam 9 pessoas. Eu nao entendo porque nao invento estas viagens de carro - ja que nao gosto de aviao, enfim foi uma excelente viagem e com uma piloto.
Quando chegamos no airtrip do Sabi Sabi - private game lodge, ja nos esperava o ranger com seu rand lover aberto de 8 lugares que nos levou para o lodge.

Quando chegamos la o manager nos

esperava para explicar como tudo funciona e todos os horarios.

O chale era um luxo - fica numa grande area - mais nao podemos andar desacompanhados - temos sempre que chamar alguem para nos levar para todos os outros ambientes que tem no lodge.

Neste mesmo dia depois do lunch - pequeno almoco, ja fomos fazer nosso primeiro safari noturno.
Nos simplesmente amamos - logo vimos uma manada de elefantes - desde big one ate os babys.
Vimos um lindo leopardo - muito rapido porque ele logo fugiu.

O safari dura 3 horas - tanto da noite quanto de dia (este comeca as 6.30 da manha). No carro tem o ranger que dirige o lover e explica tudo e mais alguma coisa e o tracker que senta bem na freente e fica procurando rastro dos bichos. As 3 horas passam rapido - isto porque eu adoro andar no bush - o ranger nao dirige so nos caminhos ele dirige tb pelo mato adentro principalmente quando ele encontra um dos five bigs (Rhinoceronte, Bufalo, Elefante, Leopardo e Leao).

E indiscritivel - eu realmente amei e voltaria muitas vezes..

Fly to Johannesburgo

We had an excellent flight to Johannesburg. We change the airplane in Perth where we stayed for 2 hours.
We are in a gated hotel precinct where it has a lot of shops, restaurants, hotels and a big casino. Everything here looks like Las Vegas.
We decide to stay here in this complex because Johannesburg is a dangerous city we can not do tourism on our owner we have to do a guided tour if we want to visit the city.
Today we are suffering badly from jet lag, we are very tired.
The time difference between Melbourne to Johannesburg is 8 hours.

Viagem para Johannesburg

Nossa viagem de Melbourne para Perth e de Perth para Johannesburg foi excelente apesar do medo de andar de aviao principalmente depois deste ultimo acidente no Brasil.
Nosso hotel e perto do aeroporto - e um complexo com varios hoteis, lojas, restaurantes e um big cassino que ja esta cheio desde de manha (hoje e sabado) imagine a noite.
Ja passeamos em todo o complexo - que por sinal me lembrou o navio do Alaska - tudo muito grande e muito decorado com grandes estatuas. Lembra um pouco Las Vegas tambem.
Este complexo e justamente para acomodar turistas que vem ate aqui para fazer safari. E um local totalmente cercado e com muita seguranca.
Ainda nao acredito que no proximo ano a copa do mundo vai ser justamente aqui - Johannesburg e considerada uma cidade muito perigosa - a gente nao pode sair sozinho fazendo turismo pela cidade como e o nosso costume. Estou me sentindo presa igual em um navio....
